We do provide paint at home kits but if you choose to book into the studio, you have the experience and expertise of The Paint Pottle team to call on; we have ideas, we have the best brushes and tools, we can fix mistakes and we do all the clearing up afterwards for you! You can paint pottery on your own or make it a group activity - email us for options.

Our top tips for beginner pottery painting

  1. Have a little look on our instagram or facebook pages or browse pinterest for ideas and inspiration before you come to the studio.

  2. If you want a white background to your design you don’t have to paint it white - because we dip glaze everything in clear glaze, your pottery will be glossy and food safe.

  3. Roughly draft your design onto the pottery with felt tips - they are water based so burn away in the kiln and don't interfere with the paints or glaze.

  4. We recommend you paint 3 layers of each colour for a nice even and opaque finish especially large areas or if you are layering colours.

  5. Use our fun colour guides to check the final colour of your pottery - the paints dry much paler than they are going to look when fired.

  6. If you go wrong, with the kinds of paints we use, you can wipe off mistakes

  7. To create intricate designs on pottery you might want to try sgraffito technique. For more creative pottery painting techniques and effects click here.

  8. You can paint glazed pottery with acrylic paints however this is not a long lasting or food safe way to decorate pottery.

  9. Our pottery and paints need to be fired in a kiln which makes them last forever (with care), food safe and ok to put in the dishwasher.
